Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, stated that the President of Ukraine had signed the Law "On Amendments to certain Acts of Ukraine appertaining to Hunting, Protection, Use and Reproduction of the Fauna" adopted on 21 January 2010.
The Law enhances criminal responsibility for illegal fishing, i.e. for the fishing with use of explosives, poisonous substances and electric current. M.Tomenko stated that poaching with the use of barbarian methods of mass extermination of fish, animals or other species of fauna had recently acquired such threatening dimensions that the legislators were obliged to respond, adopting a corresponding legislative act.
"Electric fishing sterilizes the water body, killing and injuring everything live in the range of electric current", - M.Tomenko stated.
According to M.Tomenko, this regulation is an innovation in Ukrainian legislation, so the executive authority bodies shall inform the regional subdivisions and inspectorates about its application.
